wanderer is the mobile companion to your self-hosted trail catalogue. Connect it to any wanderer instance, your own server, your club's, or a public one, and take your trails with you wherever you hike or bike. No walled garden. No algorithm deciding what you see. No subscription. wanderer is free and open source, and the app works the same whether your instance runs on a home server or a shared community host. Public and private instances federate with each other, so choosing to self-host never means choosing to hike alone. FIND YOUR NEXT TRAIL Browse a live map of trails near you, or search across trails, places, lists, and people, including users on other instances your server federates with. Filter by category, difficulty, distance, elevation, completion status, and more. Every trail page shows photos, key stats, a route with its elevation profile and waypoint timeline, a summit book of reports from everyone who has already done it, and a comments thread. THREE WAYS TO ADD A TRAIL Draw a new route directly on the map: pick hiking or one of four biking profiles, drop anchor points, and your instance's own routing engine connects them, with the elevation and total climb previewed before you set out. Or hit record and track your live position, distance, elevation gain and loss, speed, and moving time; recording keeps running in the background and survives a restart. Or simply import a GPX, KML, KMZ, TCX, or FIT file you already have. NAVIGATE TURN BY TURN Follow any trail with a heading-up map and maneuvers announced by distance ahead of time, your live stats and elevation profile alongside. Save your actual track when you finish, using the same options as a standalone recording. GO OFFLINE, ON PURPOSE Download trails and entire map regions, including optional hillshading, before you lose signal. wanderer shows you the size of each download and tracks your total offline storage. A downloaded trail views, records, and navigates exactly the same with no bars as it does with four; only browsing, searching, and route planning need a live connection back to your instance, and any recording made offline uploads automatically the moment it's reachable again. ORGANIZE AND SHARE Group trails into lists for a multi-day trek or a running bucket list; each one totals its combined distance, duration, and climb. Follow other users to keep up with their newest public trails, including across federated instances, and share your own profile with a QR code. STILL IN BETA wanderer's mobile app is in beta. Expect rough edges and the occasional bug. Never rely on it as your only means of navigation on a hike: always carry a backup, such as a paper map, compass, or dedicated GPS device. GETTING STARTED On first launch, enter the URL of the wanderer instance your account lives on, or the one you just self-hosted. Log in, or register if the instance allows it. Everything the app shows and stores comes from that server, not from us.
